Apologies... and into Venice

Hi all,

Firstly an apology for my neglect in recent weeks, especially the past fortnight or so. With my final date due to redundancy rapidly approaching (Friday 29 January) I find myself focusing on setting myself up for the future.

  1. So sorry you are going through this Greg, my work has recently put off over 30 people so it’s not looking too stable. Hope you manage to find something permanent very soon.

    1. Thanks. I just cannot believe that our governments are letting our workplaces downsize like this. Surely they must realise that it decreases their tax revenue, increases their social security costs and also decreases the nation’s consumer base, including leading to defaults on mortgage repayments (which must have an economic impact). Hope everything goes well for you too and that you survive any spills. Greg 🙂

  2. Hi Greg, seems no profession is immune. The mob currently contracted to review NSW Police are the intellectual giants responsible for downsizing one English police force by 2,500 officers. Now they are wondering over there why crime is escalating in the effected city.
No wonder people now distrust politicians, no matter which side of the house they occupy.
My thoughts are with you at this difficult time but having read so many of your thoughts on this blog, I think I have a fair idea of how resolute you are when faced with problems. I reckon you will create more satisfaction and sense of place for you and yours when the dust settles.

    All the best mate.

    1. I must admit to being worried about that police review. I read all about it the other day in the newspapers. I worry about the “sacrifices” that politicians gift us in the name of productivity and efficiency while always living the high lives themselves.

Currently I am feeling that this is a great (if scary) opportunity 🙂

      Thanks 🙂

  3. Great post Greg, with some beautiful pictures. Good luck with your next step and the possibility of returning to some authoring. I’m not sure what things are like with you but our UK government seems bent on helping the high income / most well off maintain or increase their wealth whilst making the least well off suffer. But then, most politicians (whatever their party brand) seem to be members of boards of directors where they earn a sizeable fee for nominal work or members of covert organisations with “you scratch my back…” philosophies. They’ve also sold off state owned services to the private sector. The end result of this is that companies focus on profit instead of the financial, social, spiritual welfare of their employees. And it’s no different in the public sector.
    Sorry, rant over.
The very best of luck to you for your next step, your strength and disposition I’m sure, will see you through.

    1. I hear you and share your concerns. It really worries me. I think that we are on the eve of the destruction of the middle classes and back to exploitation of the poor. Too much greed.

Thanks for your words and wishes 🙂

  4. I was in Venice last spring and your photos bring bag a lot of memories. We also entered via the Grand Canal and visited the Doge’s Palace and walked over the Rialto Bridge. When I got back and looked at my pictures probably the best ones were of Salute which just stands out so picturesquely. Venice is like no place else on earth.

  5. Yes – I like your last pic too! I have never been to Venice, Italy, only Venice California! Wouldn’t turn down the opportunity of visiting it, but doubtlessly I would have to take the trip that allows walking over all those bridges, as I get terribly sea sick in anything too big to row.

    1. Thanks 🙂 Our first time there we spent a week and walked over all the bridges 🙂 Absolutely marvellous 🙂 Yes, you have to go some time. It’s just so different to any other place. I love it. One day, however, I have to make it to the States. Never been there, despite having a few relatives there. 🙂

        1. That is so tempting. I will definitely let you know if I ever get financial enough to come over 🙂 Thanks 🙂

  6. Oh – and all the best in the forthcoming (probably already started) job hunt! Maybe some freelancing is in order….
