Book review: "The Abominable" by Dan Simmons

I first stumbled across Dan Simmons’ writing around 1990. The book was a science fiction delight called “Hyperion”. It was a science fiction epic, a Canterbury Tales for space and time travel. Since then I have frequently indulged myself in his novels. As an author he leans towards the fantastic, whether it be in science fiction or horror.

Idle thoughts about how we can reform democracy

OK – here is a big question and I will probably get myself into hot water with this, so I am asking for forgiveness in advance. But I find myself reading lots and lots of commentary regarding recent decisions in democratic countries. For years now I have also listened to lots of people complaining about every side of politics. Eeeek! I guess the first thing to consider is whether or

Book review: "Downbelow Station" by C J Cherryh

I asked him what he wanted and he told me that he wanted me to make him a black and white poster of a zebra. As I am having a good-eye day, I thought that I would

Recent months away from the PC

Hi folks, I find myself at the PC today, so I thought that I may drop in and say hello. I’ve been avoiding the PC for a couple of months. It all started after a visit to my eye surgeon in July. Once again he refused to remove any stitches. Once again my eyes seemed to show only the smallest amount of progress. They are just not settling down, he

Fair Verona

OK – long post today. I am way behind in processing my European photographs. Well, I do have around 6,000! But today I worked on it. If you follow me on Twitter (not that I post much) you will see that I am also tired from having swum a kilometre yesterday. I am really not up to that. So today I carry on with the adventure of a lifetime, my
